Who was Basil W. Woods, Jr.?
Basil W. Woods, Jr.
Basil W. Woods, Jr., was a founding member of our chapter 200 that was originally named the Concord Chapter of TU.
He served as the chapter’s initial secretary/treasurer.
Although Basil had only one functional eye, he was an accomplished fly tier and fly fisherman and very willing to share his expertise with all.
He maintained a tent camp on the Vermont side of the Connecticut River just below Lyman Falls dam, and entertained fishing friends there during the summer months. The site is currently used as a stopover for canoeists and if you visit the site, you would see remnants of the old tent camp.
Basil Woods and Bill O’Connor originated the then annual fly tying classes presented by the chapter. It is where semi-retired fly tier, Geddy Waterman got his start.
Basil was also a bird hunter and kept dogs for that purpose.
After Basil’s death in 1980, the chapter decided it would be appropriate to rename the chapter in his honor due to his allegiance to our chapter and its purpose.
He was an independent agent for State Farm Insurance.
