Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)
The native range of the brook trout spans from eastern Canada (from Hudson Bay to Newfoundland) to the eastern United States as far south as Georgia and as far west as the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi drainages. The species has been introduced in several parts of the world including the western United States, Asia, Europe, New Zealand, and South America.
Brook trout are more common in northern New Hampshire where inherently cooler summer air temperatures maintain suitable water temperatures. As one moves south, brook trout become increasingly dependent on groundwater streams as a steady source of cool water in the summer. Dianne Timmins will discuss the NH F&G efforts with support of local organizations in restoring the brook trout’s habitat and also discuss trout stocking programs
